Why Do Wisdom Teeth Grow Sideways?

Dental X-ray showing sideways wisdom teeth

Under ideal circumstances, human teeth emerge vertically from the gumline. When all of them are well-aligned, they create a functional bite and contribute to good oral and overall health. Unfortunately, though, that does not always happen. Some teeth grow at the wrong angle! That is particularly common with wisdom teeth, which are the third molars at the very back of the mouth. Why do they sometimes grow sideways, and what could that mean for your oral health? This blog post explains.

Why Do They Grow Sideways?

Wisdom teeth may grow sideways because there is simply not enough room in the mouth for them to develop normally. They may try to squeeze into your mouth at whatever angle is possible, meaning that they may be tilted or, in some instances, completely horizontal. These teeth are often fully or partially impacted (stuck beneath the gumline).

Problems Caused by Sideways Wisdom Teeth

Improperly angled wisdom teeth may cause a number of problems, including:

  • Pain. Horizontally impacted wisdom teeth can push against neighboring teeth, which can create pressure, pain, and discomfort.
  • Heightened risk of infection. Angled wisdom teeth that erupt partially from the gumline are often challenging to clean. Therefore, they are at a greater risk of cavities, decay, and infections.
  • Gum inflammation and gum disease. Impacted wisdom teeth may contribute to the development of pericoronitis (inflammation in the gum tissue) and gum disease (a dangerous type of infection).
  • Cysts. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause cysts to form. Depending on their size and location, these cysts can contribute to pain, inflammation, and damage to the jawbone.

What Can You Do?

To prevent or manage the problems caused by horizontally impacted wisdom teeth, you should:

  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups. During routine exams, your dentist can monitor your wisdom teeth. If there are indications that they could cause problems, you might need to get them extracted.
  • Seek treatment at the first sign of a problem. If you start to experience pain or other symptoms near your wisdom teeth, you should consult with your dentist before the issue has a chance to worsen.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene habits. If you have partially impacted wisdom teeth, you might be able to avoid some problems by being extra-thorough when you clean them.

Sideways wisdom teeth can endanger your oral health! Talk to your dentist to find out if it is time for you to get your third molars removed.
