When you have an infection, your body does the best it can to defend itself from harm. Different infections trigger unique responses from the body, which can sometimes be extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening. For instance, pus may be an indication of a tooth abscess, which can result in serious health complications if untreated. A tooth abscess is small pouch of pus within the gums that is caused by a bacterial infection. This may occur as a result of a dental cavity left untreated, a damaged tooth, gum disease, or other dental issues that allow oral bacteria to thrive and wreak havoc.

An abscessed tooth is typically characterized by tooth sensitivity to hot and cold items and may make it difficult for you to chew or touch the tooth due to soreness. It is also frequently accompanied with puffy swollen gums, pain, and sores on the gums. If you notice signs of fever, swelling in the neck, difficulty breathing, or extreme sickness, it is necessary to seek professional help immediately. In severe cases, tooth abscesses, if untreated, can lead to the spread of the bacterial infection in other parts of the body.

Tooth abscesses can successfully be treated by your dental professional. They may recommend draining the abscess, which involves creating a small cut in the fluid-filled sac to release the pus from your gums. A root canal may also be recommended to removed bacteria from inside the tooth’s root. In certain instances, your tooth may be recommended to be extracted to eliminate the infection.

In general, practicing good oral hygiene can be one of the most effective ways to help prevent tooth abscesses. Keep up with brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. Schedule an appointment with your dentist right away if you believe you may have a tooth abscess.
