Were you told that you need your tonsils removed? Don’t worry, you’re among many others who have been in this position. Tonsils function to defend the body against pathogens that enter your mouth. However, sometimes they can become infected (referred to as tonsillitis), resulting in serious problems such as breathing issues.
Frequently inflamed tonsils, cancerous tissue, recurrent bleeding, or infection may lead your doctor to recommend their removal via a tonsillectomy. This procedure can be done for both children and adults.

A tonsillectomy is often performed by a medical specialist, known as an ear, nose, and throat doctor. According to the Mayo Clinic, the doctor will first collect you and your family’s medical history. They will answer any questions you may have about the procedure. You may be asked to temporarily stop taking certain medications prior to the tonsillectomy. In addition, they will provide you with information regarding eating and drinking prior to the procedure.
Patients undergoing a tonsillectomy will receive general anesthesia. Some soreness and swelling may commonly be experienced after the surgery. The procedure itself may last about 1-2 hours and recovery may require approximately 2 weeks. In most instances, individuals can go home the same day of the procedure. Following the tonsillectomy, it will be very important to stay hydrated with water and avoid eating hard foods.
If you notice you are consistently having issues with your tonsils, seek medical help as soon as possible.
