Ever felt the urge to chew on ice, or know someone who does? Chewing on ice is a common habit among many, but we’ll tell you why it’s important to stop. As with other hard foods, ice can be harmful to your teeth and gums.
Chewing on ice can result in fractured or chipped teeth. Not to mention, it can damage any crowns, fillings, and other dental restorations present on your teeth. In addition, it can lead to tooth sensitivity, and an increased risk of developing tooth decay and other oral issues.
If you can’t seem to shake this bad habit, here are some tips and tricks:
- Skip adding ice to your drink all together: to try to resist chewing ice, go for a cold water bottle or refrigerated water in a glass instead.
- Let your ice melt for the cool sensation: instead of chewing the ice, let the ice melt in your mouth.
- Go for a slushi run: Slushies and smoothies will give you that cold feel and the ice is softer. Yet, still do your best not to chew on even the crushed ice.
- Speak with a professional: If you’re constantly craving ice, speak with your health professional so that they can determine if it is associated with an underlying health cause. Ice cravings may be linked to an iron deficiency.
- Crunch on nutritious foods: if you’re looking to feel the sensation of crunching, try eating carrots, apples, or other tooth-friendly fruits and vegetables. This stimulates saliva production and helps act as a natural toothbrush.
Giving up things can be challenging, but it is important to try your best to quit this bad habit for the sake of your oral health. If you are having trouble, be sure to speak with your dentist for more help.
